The CMS Pixel Phase I Upgrade, to be installed in the extended year-end technical stop 2016/2017 requires CO2 evaporative cooling. The PH-DT cooling team has been mandated to design, build, install and commission the detector cooling plant (EDMS WP).
The full-scale prototype “TIF” has been built in 2012/2013 and is now installed in bldg. 186, where it’s being commissioned. It features 15 kW cooling power at -20 C, distributed through a manifold with 8 cooling loops. Its purpose is to validate the design of the plant for P5 installation and to serve as cooling system for Pixel Upgrade detector mock-ups initially, then for the parts of the detector that will need to be validated before installation.
