Micro Channel Cooling R&D

The EP-DT team is at the forefront of the R&D on several open questions related to an effective and reliable use of micro-structured thermal management devices for HEP detectors. Among them:

  • Characterization and optimization of evaporative two-phase flows in micro-channels, both for low-pressure boiling fluids (e.g. C4F10) and for high-pressure boiling fluids (e.g. CO2);
  • Reliability and stress limits of silicon as structural material;
  • Miniaturized fluidic connections of micro-structured silicon devices to the external pipework;
  • Fluidic micro-interconnects for flow communication between thermal management devices;
  • Enhanced integration of micro-channel cooling in the design of silicon detector modules
