Scintillators production

EP-DT provides advice and, within the available resources, technical support in building scintillation counters including light guides (fish tail, adiabatic, WLS bars & fibres).

  • Jobs exceeding a certain volume can only be realised if the user provides skilled technical manpower that will be specifically trained (e.g. for gluing, wrapping work).
  • Jobs which aren't directly related to approved CERN projects can only be accepted in exceptional cases.
  • If you require advice on the choice of the scintillator, readout method and photodetector, as well as for external scintillator orders, please contact S. Jakobsen (168853).
  • For larger devices (e.g. > 20 x 20 cm2) or specific scintillator types, we normally work with the suppliers Saint Gobain (formerly Bicron) and Eljen Technology. A further supplier is DETEC Europe.
  • Delivery delays are of the order 8 weeks, but depend on complexity and volume of the order.
  • For scintillator tiles of relatively small area and thickness (up to 1 cm), we maintain a stock of standard scintillator sheets (type Bicron BC 408 or ELJEN EJ-200). For the choice of the photomultiplier tube, you may consult the websites of Hamamatsu and Electron Tubes. Photonis, formerly Philips, do not produce PMTs any longer. The ET site lists some data sheets of Photonis tubes to which they provide an equivalent device. As a further alternative, consult the webpages of the Russian supplier MELZ FEU (contact info@melz-feu.ru).
  • Scintillating and WLS fibres can be ordered from Kuraray or Saint Gobain.

Important: For all jobs, please fill the Work Request Form (MS Word,PDF), and send it to Raphael.Dumps@cern.ch (cc Sune.Jakobsen@cern.ch  ).
